| Brett Marshall |
| The Yankees signed Brett Marshall, a high school pitcher selected in the 2008 June First-Year Player Draft, to one of the largest contracts ever given to a sixth-round pick. During his senior season at Sterling High School in Baytown, Texas, Marshall compiled a 10-2 record with an ERA of 2.27. He had 116 strikeouts in 89 1/3 innings. Which also helped him earn District MVP, All-Greater Houston player of the Year, and First Team All-State. The Yankees essentially gave the sixth-round pick the kind of money normally spent on first-round supplemental picks. But Marshall had already committed to play college baseball at Rice in Houston and would have headed there if he didn't like how things played out in the Draft. The Bronx Bombers seem to have found a nice value pick in the fireballing Texan. Marshall's heater sits between 94-96 MPH and his 84-88 MPH slider has a sharp bite to it. If his brief audition in 2008 with the Yankees' GCL affiliate, he went: 6 IP, 8 Ks, 2 Hits, 2 BBs. In 2009, he was assigned to the Yankees Low A affiliate the Charleston Riverdogs located in South Carolina where he went: 3-6 w/ a 5.50 era, 87.1 IP, 60 Ks. He just recently had Tommy John surgery on July 31, and is doing really well in the recovery process. |
